ArtistJean Duplessis Bertaux (French, 1747/50-1818/20), draughtsman, engraver (mainly of book illustrations); learned his trade from Vien (drawing) and Le Bas (engraving). Professor of drawing at the École Militaire from 1770. Sometimes called the 'Callot of our days' from the miniature scale on which he worked.

Materials and Techniques:  hand colored etching on laid paper.
Provenance:  The Estate of George "Yorgo" Demetrakopoulos; professor, assistant director of the Medieval Institute, and assistant to the dean at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan, from 1965-2000.
Condition: tanned image, remnants of glue recto. The signs of aging are appropriate for the time. A detailed condition report is available on demand.
