Note: In 1744, J. Boydell was an apprentice to William Henry Toms. Soon after finishing his apprenticeship, Boydell switched to publishing as a field more suitable for his personality. This engraving is a rare example of early Boydell's work as an engraver. It is also important because it is an early attempt to use the just-invented wove paper.
The etching was reissued in one of the first books of engravings by J. Boydell, published circa 1747. In the collection of the Grosvenor Gallery, there is an album, “Six Landskips [sic] drawn after Nature” by John Boydell, including this one, executed and published by J. Boydell in 1747. (Ref 41053). We appreciate the Grosvenor Gallery for sharing the information.
