Artist: Rosso Fiorentino painter and draughtsman, (1494 - 1540). Rosso is one of the most original and inventive painters of the first generation of Mannerism.
Engraver: Jacopo Caraglio (Italian, 1500/1505–1565). An engraver of copper and hardstones, and later in life a gem engraver, goldsmith, and perhaps also an architect. In Rome in 1526, collaborated with Rosso. By 1539 in Poland, where worked for the court until his death on 26 August 1565, after.
Printmaker: unknown printmaker 16th(?) century.
Title: Ceres.
Titled, Dated, and Signed in plate: Numbered '14' at lower right. Lettered along the lower edge: 'ALMA CERES DOCUIT SEGETUM SPEM CREDERE SUICIS'. (see
P. VERGILI MARONIS GEORGICON LIBER PRIMUS). The inscription is completely cut off. We include this text for reference purposes only.
Dimensions: Sheet (trimmed within the image) 6 3/4" x 4 1/8". The original platemark was 8 1/2 x 4 3/8".
Date: after 1526 (plate).

ProvenanceThe Estate of George "Yorgo" Demetrakopoulos; professor, assistant director of the Medieval Institute, and assistant to the dean at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan, from 1965-2000.
Condition: Laid down. Part of the image and inscription is cut off. Old restoration of folds and tears. Scratches, stains, grease, foxing. The signs of aging are appropriate for the time. A detailed condition report is available on demand.
