ArtistVirgil Solis or Virgilius Solis (1514 – 1562), a member of a prolific family of artists, was a German draughtsman and printmaker in engraving, etching, and woodcut.
Title: David and Ahimelek (1 Samuel 21).
Dated and Signed in plate: 1559; monogram VS (Virgin Solis). Collector's stamp AU in ink in Gothic script recto (not in Lugt).
Dimensions: Image/sheet 3" x 4 1/2".
Edition: This woodcut, but with a decorative ornamental printed frame, was published in "Biblische Figuren deß Alten Testaments, gantz künstlich gerissen. Durch den weitberümpten Vergilium Solis, Maler und Kunststecher zu Nürnberg" By Virgil Solis, Publisher: durch Johannem Wolffium, 1565, and in several editions of the Luther's Biblia throughout the second half of 16th century and later, i.e.: "
Biblia Das ist: Die gantze heilige Schrifft, Teutsch", 1588, Publisher: durch Martin Lechler. p. 134.
