Artist: Virgil Solis or Virgilius Solis (1514 – 1562), a member of a prolific family of artists, was a German draughtsman and printmaker in engraving, etching, and woodcut.

Dated and Signed in plate: monogram VS (Virgin Solis). Collector's stamp AU in ink in Gothic script recto (not in Lugt).
Dimensions: Image/sheet 3" x 4 1/2".
Edition: This woodcut, but with a decorative ornamental printed frame, was published in several editions of Luther's Biblia throughout the second half of the 16th century and later, i.e.: "Biblia Das ist: Die gantze heilige Schrifft, Teutsch", 1588, Publisher: durch Martin Lechler. p. 127.

Materials and Techniques: woodcut on paper, letterpress verso, pasted onto the supporting sheet alongside the upper edge.
